The goddess & the blowfly

Here’s a dream interpretation tip: look for opposites in a dream. Here’s an example from our old community forum.

THE DREAM

“I am in a dimly lit, sparsely furnished room. On my right is a woman, a beautiful blonde who looks like a goddess, shining in her elegant poise and glowing out from her stillness (like the high-fashion cover-model on a Vogue magazine, for example, hair in midair, frozen, smiling in white). Nothing is happening, I just want to stay there with her, frozen warm like this.

Suddenly through the window high up to my left a huge ugly blowfly comes in and starts making a loud persistent buzzing noise buzz, buzz, buzz and flying around chaotically up above near the ceiling on the other side of the room, away from us.

I try to get rid of it by squirting it with some natural kind of fly-spray but the buzzing just gets louder. Goddess and I continue to watch the blowie, saying nothing.

Then all of a sudden the blowie turns and dives directly at me heading for my body and in the very instant that I absorb the blowfly into my body I wake up into the light.”

INTERPRETATION

The opposites in a dream help define the issues the dream is addressing. In your dream there is the stillness of the goddess versus the chaotic activity of the blowfly and there is the beauty of the goddess and the ugliness of the fly.

Firstly this suggests you are seeking a stillness of being but your quest is disrupted by chaos. The buzzing of the fly is like the buzzing of your mind, buzz, buzz, buzz, drowning out the peace you seek. The fly enters the room from high up, near the ceiling, as if emanating from your head, intrusive thoughts.

Secondly the beauty of the goddess is marred by the ugliness of the blowfly. A goddess is a revered person, an ideal, on a pedestal perhaps. Do you pursue ideals only to be upset when you find imperfections?

You described the goddess as shining and glowing and she reminded you of the colour white in the Vogue photograph. Shining, glowing, white light. The purpose of a goddess is to enlighten. Enlightenment is achieved by shining light into the dark to reveal the shadows, to reveal the buzzing blowflies, to know oneself more clearly in all shades of light and dark.

Remember that other people in your dream symbolise your thoughts and beliefs about them. The goddess and the blowfly both represent facets of your own self.

In your dream you suddenly realised that the blowfly is a part of your own nature, just as much as the goddess is. You tried to kill it, but it wouldn’t die.

The only way to rid yourself of any belief you regard as negative is firstly to acknowledge it, to own it, to absorb it. You did this in the dream – you literally absorbed the blowfly. You absorbed it into your body, a place where you could feel it rather than know it. Owning a belief is an act of the heart, not of the intellect.

After absorbing the fly you woke up. You literally awakened to the blowfly, to the existence and beauty of the complexity of your being.
