Yesterday I invited people on FaceBook to pick a number between 1 and 365 to get a reading from my book The Compass. (There are 365 readings in the book.)
Barbara was first to respond, picking number 88, ‘Be intimate’. Here’s the full reading:
88: BE INTIMATE
WHY?
Sharing personal insight and feelings heals body, mind and soul.
CLARITY
Who knows the personal, private you?
Who do you know well, personally and privately?
What have you learned, about others, about life in general, and about yourself, from hearing other people’s personal stories? Imagine sharing your personal details in the same way. How does this make you feel? What fears does it bring up? How might your life change? How might other people’s lives be changed? Are you ready to risk healing yourself and others?
ALCHEMY PRACTICE
A good way to break the ice when you have a fear of intimacy is to start with someone who does not have an emotional relationship with you – someone you can trust. The best example is a counsellor. Counsellors hear intimacies every day, and are comfortable with them. Knowing that whatever you say is confidential also helps during the practice phase. An alternative is to join an online discussion group (relationships, self help), choosing a name for yourself to keep your identity confidential. Once you see and feel the benefits of intimacy, you’ll feel more positive and confident about being intimate in your important personal relationships.
